Tattoos are enjoying a renewed popularity, particularly with young women. While you might think tattoos are a relatively new attraction because they are so much more visible than they used to be, they are older than dirt. Some say they've been around since 12,000 BC.

Tattooing had different purposes in different cultures. Some were physical advertisements of particular homemaking skills, worn by women to attract a warrior mate.

In some cultures, tattoos around the wrist and fingers were worn to keep the wearer safe from illnesses. Even in today's culture, for example, young people tattoo themselves for perceived beauty. Others use specific designs to indicate membership in a gang or club.

The frozen body of a man with 57 tattoos on his body was discovered on a mountain between Italy and Austria in 1991. He lived during 3300 BC, or 53 centuries ago, and had a cross tattooed on the inside of his left knee, six straight lines above the kidneys and several parallel lines on his ankles. There's been some speculation that the marks represent arthritis sites on his body.

Originally, it was believed that the person with an animal or predatory bird tattoo adopted the nature and the spirit of the image. Tribal hunters would decorate their bodies with images of fierce animal hunters to produce successful hunts. Some even included tattoos of current religious idols or spirits to keep them safe during dangerous hunting expeditions.

An earlier find in 1948, uncovered tattooed mummies around 2400 years old in the Altai mountains of Western Siberia. They sported a variety of animal tattoos and some mystical ones, like griffins and monsters. More than a few researchers think the mystical tattoos were decorative.

Egyptian history is full of drawings depicting various art forms identified as abstract geometric patterns. Amunet, a priestess at Thebes, lived between 2160 BC and 1994 BC. Her mummified remains were discovered in 1891 and displayed groupings of dots and dashes. The Egyptians shared this art form with Crete, Greece, Persia and Arabia. Its spread reached southeast Asia by 2000 BC.

A woman with a tattoo is a sight to behold, they carry them so well. A woman seems to have a new boost of confidence when she gets a nice tattoo, and they can be so cheeky with it too, just showing a glimpse of a lower back tattoo under a short top or wearing shorter tight trousers to show off the new ankle tattoo. Yes I have to say "kudos" to all the tattooed females of the world.

Let's not forget one important fact, the tattooist who put the designs where they are. The position and the size of the tattoo weren't designed just for her (not usually), so it was a joint effort between the woman wearing the tattoo and a very good tattooist that landed that ink in the right place and proportion.

When a woman goes to a tattooist she needs to sit down and decide on a design which she really loves, something which may reflect her personality, cheeky, bold, loud and so on. But this is only half the job, getting the tattoo design in the right place is just as difficult.

The last thing a woman wants when she has a slender well toned body is a grotesque design which is so big that it takes over her whole arm or leg and looks completely out of place. Again this comes down to a joint co-operation between her and the tattooist, a good tattooist will tell you whether the design you want is too big or too small, whether it will look out of place in the position you requested But! Most of all they will be able to tell you whether they can re-scale the design without making it look awful once it's on the skin.

Tattoos for women should never be rushed, if you have a favorite band or movie star, which may change tomorrow. Lower back tattoos, symbols, birds and animals are the most popular tattoo designs for women, but this doesn't mean that you have to go with what's normal.

A tattoo is hopefully for life; don't rush into anything without thinking long and hard about it.
There are hundreds of thousands of designs in the world, so don't feel overwhelmed when you start your search for the right design.

Celtic design tattoos, both because of their ancient historical symbolism and because they are simply among the most beautiful tattoos in the entire tattoo universe, are among the most requested of all tattoo designs. Both men and women of all ages have become intrigued with the aura surrounding Celtic design tattoos, and are hoping some of it will rub off on them.

The inspiration for Celtic design tattoos originated in Great Britain, dating as far back as drawings from the sixth century which appeared in manuscripts of Scripture which was copied in elaborate calligraphy by the Christian monks of the period. The manuscript decoration was extremely ornate, but Celtic design tattoos can be as intricate or as simple as their wearers desire.

The Monks responsible for the Celtic manuscript had the responsibility of combining the pagan imagery of the Celts with their accepted Christian symbols, to aid in the evangelization of the Celtic peoples. The Celtic design tattoos which most clearly illustrate this blending of symbolism is the Celtic cross tattoo, which is a traditional Christian cross with a circle at its center said to represent the ancient Druidic symbol for the sun.
Celtic design tattoos are most often known for their fascinating knots and interlacing, or "plaitwork" which will entertain viewers endlessly as they try to unravel them. The Celtic knot is another Druidic symbol, evoking the unending cycles of life and death, and the perfect and eternal circle.

The universal appeal of Celtic design tattoos, in fact, many lie in their abstract nature. With flowing spirals, squares, and geometrical forms, they are more of an attempt to create an emotion in the viewer rather than to be representational art.

One of the most delightful elements of Celtic design tattoos, in fact, is in their portrayal of animals. The animals in Celtic design tattoos are as complex as the Celtic knots; cats, deer, dogs, lions, tigers, birds and dragons are portrayed when the lines and thread of plaitwork, instead on forming eternal knots and loops, end with the depiction of animal heads, feet and tails. Many of the animals are inspired by medieval depictions of animals, and have a highly appealing air of whimsy.

In a world gone tattoo-mad, tribal art tattoos seem to have cause more than their fair share of the frenzy. They are the most requested, and most easily recognized, of all tattoos. With their startling black lines and sharply defined abstract shapes which somehow evoke animal, birds, and reptiles, tribal art tattoos remind us of a long-lost connection to an unspoiled world.

The term tribal art tattoos encompasses the tattoo styles developed by the by the African and Pacific Island tribal cultures, and of those the Maori people of New Zealand created the most distinctive tattoos. Their custom of identifying separate families within their tribes by cutting and coloring that family's history into the faces of its descendants is known as Moko, and has been the inspiration for many a modern facial tribal art tattoo.

Maori tribal tattoo art is recognizable for its two types of patterns. One was a pigmented line, and the other involved inking the background and allowing the untouched skin to form the pattern. Many of the Maori tattoos contain spirals similar to fern fronds.

The Native American also used tribal art tattoos as a means of tribal identification, and their warriors had battle tattoos believed to provide protection; the tribes of Samoa, on the other hand, would cover their young men entirely in tattoos as a rite of passage into adulthood. Tribal art tattoos have been used for a variety of reasons, and very few of them were simply ornamental.
Tribal art tattoos did not make their way to the "civilized" world until they were brought back by nineteenth century sailors who were willing tolerate the extremely painful inking techniques practiced by the tribal tattoo artists. But the tribal art tattoos which have currently taken the world by storm are not quite the same as the ones which decorated the torsos of many a sun-burned deck hand.

The mainstream tribal art tattoos with which we re all so familiar are really a hybrid form of tattoo, which combines features of the ancient tribal tattoos with design elements first introduced in the 1990s by master tattoo artist Leo Zulueta, himself a Filipino-American. Zulueta has made a point never to copy directly from the original tribal art tattoo designs, because he considers it disrespectful for those not directly related to the tribes to wear their symbols of family and empowerment.

Research your tribal design well, and learn the meaning that different designs may have.

 2. Flowers. Flowers are great for lower back designs. But instead of just having one flower, consider multiple flowers. These really get noticed and are much stronger than a single flower design.  The oldest known tattoo is that found on Oetzi, a Bronze Age warrior who lived some fifty-three centuries ago. Oetzi's remains were founding 1991 preserved in the ice of the of an Alpone glacier on the border of Austria and Italy.

. Oetzi actually had fifty-seven separate tattoos, and although no one really knows their significance, it is possible that his intersecting and parallel lines are the earliest yet discovered example of tribal art tattoos. If so, Oetzi would be surprised to learn that he is quite the 21st century trend-setter.
